March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of screening and prevention. Colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., but it is highly preventable when caught early. This cancer often starts as precancerous polyps in the colon or rectum, which can be detected and removed before becoming cancerous. Routine screenings are recommended for adults starting at age 45, or earlier with risk factors. Early detection can prevent or catch cancer at an effective stage. A colonoscopy is the gold standard for colorectal cancer screening. It’s a safe procedure where a gastroenterologist examines the colon and removes precancerous polyps, with patients asleep throughout. • How often? If negative, repeat every 10 years. • Referrals: Call our office for a referral without an appointment. If you're at low risk, you may qualify for Cologuard, an FDA-approved at-home screening option. • How it works: It checks a stool sample for blood and abnormal DNA. • How often? Every three years, if negative, a positive result requires a colonoscopy. • To request: Call our office, and we’ll help with the process. At MedNOW, we make colorectal cancer screening easy and accessible. Whether you choose a colonoscopy or an at-home test, screening is a vital step in protecting your health.
